While we were waiting for our hoglet to grow big enough to bring home, we did a lot of reading about the proper care and housing of hedgehogs so we already knew that we were eventually going to need a heater of some sort to keep her warm and cozy in the winter months ahead.
We eventually plan to move her to a Critter Nation cage, but we decided that Poppy would spend the first month or two living in a large plastic storage container because it was the safest and most convenient choice until she got a little bigger.
Because didn't want to have to worry about the risk of fire with the addition of a heater in the plastic tub, we decided on a SnuggleSafe Pet Heating Pad. We loved that it didn't have any electric wires at all. You just heat it up in your microwave and the non-toxic, environmentally friendly Thermapol compound inside the pad retains heat for 10-12 hours!
The SnuggleSafe plate-size pad was so comforting to Poppy when we first brought her home in the chilly fall weather. We put it inside her igloo hidey spot to keep her warm and cozy because we thought she would miss the warmth of snuggling up with her mom and siblings, although our house was a still a comfortable temperature in the high 70's on most days. It was awesome and really helped her adjust to her new surroundings. Sometimes she would sprawl out on it on her belly like she was sunbathing on a beach.
It will probably even come in handy if we ever need to travel or go out in cold weather because it can easily be tucked inside a carrier for her to snuggle up against.
This heating pad is perfect for newborn, convalescing, arthritic and eldery pets too.
